October visit to Chit Beer

A guest post by Pat, a friend and fellow thirsty Bangkok resident, on his October visit to Chit Beer. Often considered a sacred destination for craft beer lovers in and around Bangkok, the location is north of the city, and thus takes a bit of travel to get up to the bar.

Chit Beer – Ko Kret, Nonthaburi

Established in 2012, Chit Beer is one of Thailand’s original craft beer breweries. We visited their original bar on Ko Kret, an island in the Chao Phraya River on the outskirts of Bangkok.

Getting there is part of the experience. You can take a taxi to Wat Sanam Nuea and catch the ferry across, or take the Chao Phraya Express Boat from Nonthaburi Pier before transferring to the island ferry.

When we visited, several restaurants and bars around the island were flooded. Chit Beer itself was unaffected, although within our first hour the rising tide had flooded the path outside!

There were eight beers on tap, and we settled on the Strata Single IPA (6%), at 160 baht a glass. You can also order a jug, which works out at roughly three glasses with no real saving. We enjoyed the IPA so much that we stuck with it for the rest of the visit. At 160 baht, it’s a pretty good price for craft beer.

The atmosphere was a real highlight. It felt like a genuinely local experience, with very few foreigners around, live bands playing mostly Thai music and a crowd enthusiastically singing along. There was plenty of food and beer, and the locals were friendly, welcoming and happy to chat and raise a glass with us.

A little effort is required to get there, but Chit Beer is well worth the trip for good beer, live music and a taste of local life just outside Bangkok.
