Sato: the next big thing

Could sato be the next big thing to hit Bangkok’s drinking scene? It is already in a number of bars and stores around Bangkok, and it is produced by a number of local small producers. Sato can be found at many of the beer events that happen around the city, and in a recent article, Member of Parliament, Taopiphop suggested the amount of sato is going to explode in volume and popularity.

What is Sato?

Sato is often a clear, sometimes sparkling, rice wine, that is like the cousin to sake. Or as Joe Stange wrote in his excellent article in Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine, the unique Thai drink sato is:

“a folk drink fermented from sticky rice, wild yeast, molds, and a seemingly random mix of botanicals.”

Where to try some sato?

Sato producers are building a presence in Bangkok, and can be found in a few places around the city, but will also be found at beer and alcohol festivals. One to look out for is Beer People Fest, by ประชาชนเบียร์ (Prachonbeer) / ‘Beer people’ in Chang Chui Creative Market.
